As can be seen from these photographs of the current memorial, the location and layout of the site is highly fitting, providing a tranquil spot in the heart of today's busy town environment - a suitable place for reflection and recollection.
Interestingly, the original site was laid out in the early 1920's but it is thought the trees planted to provide a suitable backdrop to the memorial where not planted until the mid 1950's.These Acer Brilliantisms can be seen clearly in the photographs. The unique feature of these plants is their leaves are in full colour around Easter time, which in this case may have been intended as a symbol of resurrection? Whereas at the time of Remembrance Day in November their branches are bare (which may possibly have been a deliberate intention meant to symbolise the fallen themselves?)
To get an idea how powerful this looks on the ground here are a couple of photographs of the site taken at different points in the year. |
