Upgrading The Memorial

If you are planning to visit Wednesbury and would like to visit our Towns War Memorial you can find the memorial gardens in Walsall Street just off the A461 adjacent to Wednesbury's Central Library. To get a better idea of the exact location of the memorial please visit the link to this multimap page.

As can be seen from these photographs of the current memorial, the location and layout of the site is highly fitting, providing a tranquil spot in the heart of today's busy town environment - a suitable place for reflection and recollection.

Interestingly, the original site was laid out in the early 1920's but it is thought the trees planted to provide a suitable backdrop to the memorial where not planted until the mid 1950's.These Acer Brilliantisms can be seen clearly in the photographs. The unique feature of these plants is their leaves are in full colour around Easter time, which in this case may have been intended as a symbol of resurrection? Whereas at the time of Remembrance Day in November their branches are bare (which may possibly have been a deliberate intention meant to symbolise the fallen themselves?)

To get an idea how powerful this looks on the ground here are a couple of photographs of the site taken at different points in the year.

When the group considered how we might include the names of the fallen into the site, consideration was given for adding plaques to the wall running immediately behind the memorial (which is though to have been the originally intended siting place). This was rejected though, because it was feared that the additional weight of the plaques might compromise the structural integrity of the wall itself, and secondly because when the Acers came into full leaf their glorious display would severely restrict viewing of the plaques themselves.

Here then is an artists rendition of how the final update to the Memorial will look when the intended name plaques are in position:
